表参道の隠れ家的なカフェ CAFE in Harajuku

明治神宮前のカフェ/OnJapan CAFE

東京を象徴する発信地である原宿は、国内外問わず旅行客に人気の地域です。
そんな地域にありながら、表通りの喧噪から一歩離れた、ゆったりと過ごせる
ライブラリー・カフェを計画しました。

キャットストリートから1本入った裏路地なので
ほんの少し隠れ家的なカフェだからこそ
ゆったりとくつろげるカフェになっています。

OnJapan Inc., a new Japanese start-up company which aims to create and share a wide range of resources - physical and digital - and provide connections with individuals and organizations in Japan opened its first project, the OnJapan CAFE in Harajuku, as a hub for its various projects. The CAFE offers an introduction to the traditional Hakko (fermented) food culture of Japan, especially the lunch menu that uses authentic ingredients such as sake lees, a sake sampling menu, in an inviting and relaxing Japanese style cafe.

2020年の東京オリンピックへ向けて

2020年の東京オリンピックに向けて、多様なプラットフォームを活用して日本の魅力を
海外へ発信し、共有する事業の一環として、飲食するだけの空間に留まらない情報や
コンテンツを体験できる場として、このカフェが位置づけられています。
日本に関する様々な情報を多言語で発信し、体験の場を提供することで、
日本人ばかりでなく訪日外国人までもターゲットにした、マルチリンガルなカフェです。

また、ユネスコの無形文化遺産に登録された和食に着目し、
旨味をテーマとした豊かな日本の食文化も提案しています。

The CAFE also provides the venue for the second OnJapan project, OnJapan EVENTS, which will host regular events ranging from cooking lessons using some of the ingredients from the CAFE’s dishes, to seminars and workshops hosted by local experts in Japanese culture. OnJapan Inc. will sponsor these events, or run them in collaboration with local organizations, businesses and individuals.
OnJapan TRAVEL, the third OnJapan project, aims to take full advantage of OnJapan’s extensive network throughout Japan to offer international visitors the opportunity to enjoy authentic Japanese experiences not available on the popular tourist trail. These activities will be a natural offshoot of the eating and cultural experiences hosted by the CAFE.

数百冊を所蔵するライブラリー

カフェの1つの特徴として、日本の芸術、食文化、武道、建築や庭園など
多岐にわたる日本文化を紹介した数百冊の英文書籍を蔵書しており、
利用者は自由に閲覧することができます。
壁一面のライブラリは空間に色を添えいますが、単なる空間演出のための
ディスプレイではなく、先に述べた事業内容の重要な一翼を担っています。

また、旬の食材を使用した料理レッスン、日本酒や抹茶のセミナー、生け花や
書道のワークショップなど日本の伝統文化を体験できる
フレキシブルな場として計画しました。
可変的な家具や照明計画により空間に冗長性を持たせることで、
こうした多様なイベントに対応しています。

Much more than a simple coffee shop, OnJapan CAFE is designed to become the hub of this new venture. Located in the heart of Tokyo’s vibrant Harajuku-Meijijingu district, this new concept CAFE will include a library and a venue to host events. A large collection of English titles focusing on Japan and its culture will be available for visitors to browse, while regular events, workshops and exhibitions will be hosted by local experts sharing their invaluable knowledge. This collection of free resources will keep growing as OnJapan begins to publish its own material for sales in Japan and abroad under the name ‘OnJapan Publishing’.

隠れ家的な雰囲気と充実した空間

コンクリートの躯体に大きく穿たれた窓からは、街と繋がる風景に接続することはできず、
隣地にある建物の無味な壁面が広がっています。
前面道路は、繁華街の裏路地のため人通りも疎らです。
そのため、内部空間の充実化と、隠れ家的な落ち着いた雰囲気の両立が求められました。

まず数百冊の洋書を所蔵するために大きな本棚を計画し、本棚が設置される壁面全体を
同様の素材と色合いで仕上げました。コンクリートの質感と調和の取れた木質の穏やかな
色調の中に、洋書の表紙や背表紙がアクセントとなり、多様な背景を作り出しています。

The scenery seen from a big window of OnJapan CAFE, that is a tasteless wall of the neighboring building. Because the frontal road is back alley, pedestrian traffic is sparse. And, the things necessary for this CAFE is substantial internal space and coexistence of the calm atmosphere like a secluded house. At first, We have designed the big bookshelf to possess several hundred foreign books. The wall which was adjacent to the bookshelf has been finished with the same material and hue. The cover and the spine cover of the foreign book produce colorful landscape on a calm color of wood. The flooring has been used the material which gradually adds to astringency by a secular variation. Astringency is one of the Japanese aesthetic senses. We have expressed elegance (means Fuzei in Japanese, Fuzei is one of the aesthetic feelings which have existed from ancient times in Japan.) by a inner garden (means Tsubo-Niwa in Japanese).
